Asparagus-
Blueberry Hill Farm also offers several varieties and two colors of asparagus. Asparagus harvest typically begins mid-April and runs through the end of May. Asparagus is a great source of folic acid and vitamins and rich in fiber. Are you afraid to buy, not knowing how to prepare it? Just ask us. We can give several recipes.
Honey
We are looking to harvest sometime after Labor Day. Customers really loved the 2 ½ lb jars- hopefully we’ll be able to fill many more of them this year. Let us know if you would prefer your honey in a glass bottle. We had some interest last year. Glass jars will increase the price somewhat. Our honey is a mixed wildflower so its taste is ever-changing season to season.
Our first honey pull of the season was in July this year- what a taste,... but oh so fast it goes! Alan will be getting into the hives sometime soon to see if there will be more. We will stock our larder first, sell secondly, so keep checking back.
Pumpkins and gourds
We really love the fall color and interest that pumpkin and winter squash bring. Hopefully, the third time will prove to be a charm and we’ll have great results. If not, we’ll evaluate whether we should pursue this any longer.
OK... pumpkins... not happening this year. We did start later than we'd like- however we are not even getting fruit- just lots of flowers.
We can't seem to pull ourselves away from this venture- let's see what 2010 brings.
Apples, Apples, Apples- 2008 was our first (in 4 years) good apple harvest. We started out looking pretty good this year too. Unfortunately, we were fooled! Lack of human attention, pest control- lots of BlueJay attention has taken its toll.
Our trees are about 13 years old and haven't been pruned in at least 5 years... bad farmer!...
This winter we'll be pruning, probably pretty hard. You can check with us in 2010- September/October- but it'll likely be 2011 before we have a decent crop.
